The outlier, and worth understanding before paying for it. It weighs less than everything else on this page and costs four times as much. How to choose

Four specs decide most of it

1 · Fabric, in this order

Microfibre is the cheapest and the least breathable. Washed cotton sits in the middle and softens with washing. Cotton-linen blends cost roughly twice as much again and sleep noticeably cooler. If you sleep hot, that last gap is the one worth paying for.

2 · Corner ties, and how many

Four is the common shortfall and the reason a duvet cover ends up bunched at one end. Look for eight. It is a small detail that decides how the item behaves every week for years.

3 · Compartment size on any bead-filled blanket

Glass beads move. Small compartments hold them in place; large ones let the weight slide overnight. Five-inch squares or smaller is the number to look for, and it is usually buried in the description.

4 · Weight, against your own

The commonly published guide is about 10% of body weight. In practice: a 20 lb blanket is aimed at adults around 190–210 lb. Overshooting doesn't work better, it just becomes harder to sleep under.

Almost everything sits between $24 and $50 and is built the same way: glass beads in stitched compartments. The $199 entry is not a heavier version of those. It is lighter, and the money goes on a knit structure with no synthetic fill.

How we assess

What we look at, and what we refuse to invent

Published specifications

A product that states its fabric, its GSM, its compartment size and its washing instructions is easier to compare than one that doesn't. We record what is published and mark the rest as not published. We don't fill gaps with plausible numbers.

Retailer rating, with its sample size

Ratings on this page are the retailer's, shown with the number of ratings behind them. We have not run our own review programme and we don't present their average as ours. Where we haven't recorded an average from the listing, the entry says so — two products above show a count without a star figure for exactly that reason.

Category rank

Where a product holds a ranked position in its category, that is a real signal and we show it. It moves, so the date it was checked is on every entry.

Price against the category

Judged against comparable products, not against the cheapest thing on the internet. The price bands above are the yardstick.

Certification

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and similar marks are listed with their certificate numbers where the maker publishes them, so you can verify the claim independently.

What we will not do

We will not claim to have tested a product we have not tested. We will not state a specification the maker doesn't publish. We will not show a rating average we haven't recorded. Where that leaves a gap, the gap stays visible.
